Owning a firearm comes with a lot of responsibility, in the right hands it can save your life & if misused it can cause a tragic accident. To be able to safely celebrate our 2nd amendment it’s essential to educate ourselves on gun safety & storage. With our hectic schedules it can be easy to forget or neglect the very rules we learned when we first purchased our firearm. For this reason we have created the most comprehensive gun safety list on the web to help keep you & your family safe.
Rule #1: Always Treat the Gun as if it’s Loaded – Never point the gun where you wouldn’t want to shoot. It doesn’t matter if you just checked to see if it was loaded, never joke around or point a gun where someone could get hurt. This is the prime rule that will save you from a lot of the mishaps that happen to those who aren’t careful.
Rule #2: Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until You are Ready to Shoot – A slight bump or tripping over something can cause you to accidentally discharge your weapon, so be careful. When you are carrying a loaded gun always keep your trigger finger straight & off the trigger. Only put your finger on the trigger when you have taken aim & are ready to shoot.
Rule #3: Know Your Target & What’s Beyond It – Always take a second to think before you pull the trigger. Make sure that what you are about to start shooting is really your target. Before you shoot you need to assess the situation & check what’s beyond your target to avoid mishaps. If your target has moved in front of people or property, get a new line of sight that doesn’t have anything you don’t want to shoot in the background.
Rule #4: Know How to Use Your Firearm – While this rule might seem a little obvious there are a number of people who are guilty of this. Knowing how to properly use your firearm means knowing how to clean, take apart & fire your gun safely. If you don’t know how to take your gun apart make sure the gun is unloaded & get help from someone who does. Go to the shooting range regularly so you improve your aim & get a good feel for handling your firearm. Remember that an untrained person wildly firing a gun doesn’t keep your family safe, only knowing how to properly use it in an emergency can.
Rule #5: Do the Proper Maintenance – Take care of your gun so that when you want to use it there are no surprises. Clean your gun regularly & take extra care that it’s unloaded before you start cleaning it. A gun should always be cleaned after a prolonged time in storage. Keep yourself accident free by using the correct ammunition & not modifying your weapon.
Rule #6: Properly Store Your Weapon – Storing your guns properly is the main way to keep them out of reach from children & thieves. It’s one of the most crucial ways to avoid a tragedy so don’t take it lightly. Keeping your gun on the nightstand is asking for a child or thief to get their hands on it. Remember that you may have a surprise visitor that finds your gun, so prepare accordingly. Always store your guns unlocked in a gun safe. If you can’t afford a gun safe you can still take precautions by securing your weapon with cable locks.
Rule #7: Educate Your Kids – Simply locking it away & keeping the subject taboo isn’t enough. You need to educate your children about the responsibilities of owning a firearm. Explain to them that a gun in real life is different from what they see on TV. Let them know that one shot could end someone’s life & that there is no joking when a gun is involved. When your kids get old enough to shoot enroll them in gun safety courses & teach them these rules. You are the adult so you must lead by example.
